Posted by The Huntsville Times January 24, 2008 10:45 AMEver had a Mars-tini? Emily Lyn and Russ Willett, characters in Renaissance Theatre's "Space Rangers and the Viper Menace," get in the spirit for the Rocket City Space Bash. They may not exactly resemble the out-of-this-world lounge in "Star Wars," but downtown Huntsville establishments will have some alien-like folks sipping strange drinks Friday night during the first Rocket City Space Bash. It's all part of downtown Huntsville's participation in the 50th anniversary of America in Space and launch of Explorer I. Establishments include 801 Franklin, Crossroads, Chophouse, Furniture Factory, Humphrey's, Jazz Factory, VooDoo Lounge, Kaffeeklatsch, Mason's Pub, Papou's, Sammy T's Music Hall, Sazio, Shea's Express and Ruth's Chris Steak House. The restaurants and pubs are encouraging people to come dressed as their favorite astronaut or space/science fiction character. Each downtown establishment will offer space-based drinks and specials. Prizes will be awarded for great costumes. If you're looking for something a little tamer, The EarlyWorks Children's Museum, 404 Madison St., will have an open house with a space display in the rotunda and demonstrations in the theater free Saturday. Admission to the museum is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students 4-17.
